Telecom Italia

Hunter Newby interviews Stefano Mazzitelli, CEO, Telecom Italia SPARKLE for telx|vision

Hunter Newby(HN): So tell me a little bit about Telecom Italia and Sparkle and sort of what you’re seeing in the marketplace today.

Stefano Mazzitelli(SM): Telecom Italia as you know is the incumbent player in Italy and is the dominant player there. And Telecom Italia Sparkle is the subsidiary of Telecom Italia 100% owned by Telecom Italia which deals with the international wholesale carrier offer and global services offer of Telecom Italia around the world. It’s a company entity that was created in 2002, we spun off all of the international assets of Telecom Italia and we put it into this box and the thought was there to give it tremendous focus on the international and wholesale market and this started to pay off really well because we had all of the ingredients of the sales, marketing and network in house. I think we are able to cover the market, and the market has been changing very fast. And we have proven in the past years here that we can be leading edge and you know getting product in the marketplace very fast. Commercially corporate with the market dynamics and the you know making all of the technology and network investment which are allowing us to be, I would say without being modest, that Sparkle is one of the leading players in the wholesale market worldwide.

HN: Clearly. I certainly see you guys all over the place, that’s tremendous. I know that Telecom Italia specifically was an innovator with Voice over IP, I remember an announcement many many years ago that you actually converted the Rome to Milan route to Voice over IP entirely, which was one of the first deployments of its kind, ever. How has Voice Over IP, internally within your network evolved and also an extension of that, the hand-offs to other voice providers, sort of the transition in the global sense, how has that sort of grown?

SM: I think you’re right in saying that we were one of the first players in actually implementing and believing in Voice over IP. First of all, our International network is all end to end all soft switch based and our transport layer is all IP since 2003 and we were probably the first carrier in the world to implement that, fully the soft switch based network. Domestic also Telecom Italia is very active in it, we believe that in terms of coping with the market trends Voice over IP together with the broadband is one of the key features we can offer to the customer. Of course as one of the global dominant providers in the global providers we see Voice over IP certainly as an opportunity and also as a potential threat if you don’t manage that very well.

HN: That’s true,

SM: it certainly gives a lot of efficiencies in terms of providing benefits to the customer that are really appreciative of that. And in terms of our retail playing, we are one of the leading providers in Europe, not only in Italy, because as you know we also own Telecom Italia operations in France and Germany, and our IP, Voice over IP proposition together with our Broadband is one of the killer applications that we have in house. It’s not a totally mature market in terms of customer appreciating that and in terms of technology on the retail level. And I think that we are having good experiences in testing new technology in our network, new supporting systems and new interfaces with the incumbent network in France and Germany. Now this is paying off. I think we’re one of the few carriers that actually got into the service at the level of TDM technology for the customers.
